Stikine River - Glacier Flightseeing
Package (SA-201)
Leaving Wrangell Airport you'll head first towards
LeConte Glacier, a long, twisting, deep blue fjord surrounded
with steep spruce covered mountains near the mouth to nearly vertical
granite cliffs rising to over 4,000 feet at the head. The fjord
is often choked with icebergs of all sizes and descriptions and
is terminated by LeConte Glacier. The ice cliffs tower over 500
feet above saltwater and are constantly collapsing into the fjord
creating resting and pupping areas for hundreds of seals. Mountain
goats abound in the area. LeConte Glacier is the southernmost
tidewater glacier in North America.
From there, your pilot will continue flying over
the glacier which then becomes Shakes Glacier. Both glaciers are
one huge ice-field but LeConte Glacier terminates in Frederick
Sound (saltwater) while Shakes Glacier terminates at Shakes Lake,
which in turn, feeds into the Stikine River.
The fastest navigable and free-flowing river in
North America, the Stikine River, is just as it was during the
time John Muir first discovered the magnificent beauty of this
area. The upper river valley is crisscrossed with many river channels,
sloughs, sand dunes, clear feeder streams, beaver ponds and lush
"moose" meadows. The flat valley floor is hemmed in
by the nearly vertical, snowcapped Coast Range Mountains. Heading
back to Wrangell takes you over the huge, lush, marsh delta fed
by three arms of the main river with numerous sloughs, potholes
and sand dunes all ending in a large mud flat. The area is teeming
with waterfowl, moose, eagles and bears.
A photographers paradise -- and all this in just
45 minutes! A trip you don't want to miss!
